#4. SSU – Prof. Mordechai (Muki) Haklay (University College London)

PART OF THE 2022/23 STADSSALONSURBAINS LECTURE SERIES ‘MOVING CITIES FORWARD, LEAVING NO ONE BEHIND: TOWARD FAIT & SUSTAINABLE TRANSITIONS’

‘What is the role of citizen and community science in a sustainable city?’

Citizen science has gained attention over the past fifteen year. It’s a practice that engages people who are not professional scientists in the process of research. In different forms, it exists in the natural and social sciences, and in the humanities. Different transitions have enabled it – from increase in the level of education, to the availability of smartphones. In this seminar, we will explore the emergence of citizen science and its implication for the environmental and social management of cities. What are the implications of this practice for inclusiveness and equity of cities and their inhabitants – both spatially and within communities? We will look at the complexities that citizen and community science are bringing to our understanding of the production of knowledge and its future.
