Hélène Sechehaye is an FRS – FNRS research fellow at the Université Libre de Bruxelles working on a project about the practice of chaabi music in Brussels. More generally, Hélène is interested in so-called traditional music in Belgium, and more particularly the Moroccan diaspora.
Doctorate in Music and Musicology (Université Libre de Bruxelles/Université Jean Monnet, Saint-Etienne). During her studies, Hélène developed an interest in Brussels as a breeding ground for traditional music. In 2014 she was hired by the Muziekpublique association, a centre for the promotion and dissemination of traditional and world music, where she coordinates the world music academy and then the label. She was involved in producing the projects Voxtra, Vardan Hovanissian & Emre Gültekin and Refugees for Refugees.
Between 2023 and 2026, Hélène will devote her time to post-doctoral research into the practice of Moroccan chaabi music in Belgium with Laïla Amezian as part of the Chaabi Habibi project run by the non-profit organisation HalfmOon.
