From digital inequality to digital justice?

Digitalisation is happening at breakneck speed. Whether you want to look something up or buy a train ticket, you often can’t do anything without digital tools. These developments are happening too fast for many people. Not only the elderly, but also other population groups such as the socially vulnerable and even youngsters often find it difficult. For example, no less than 70% of low-skilled Brussels residents are digitally vulnerable. Paola Verhaert outlines the current situation and possible paths to digital equity.

Paola Verhaert is a Brussels-based researcher and writer. She has been working at the intersection of technology and social justice for ten years. In her work, she studies the impact of technology on society, with a focus on citizens, vulnerable communities and the government. She is currently affiliated with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where she conducts research on digital citizenship and digital equity policy. Her first book, entitled “Technology is political: The struggle for digital justice”, will be published in November.
