Gender(on)gelijkheid in de publieke ruimte (NL)
You see loitering boys everywhere, but from the age of nine, girls rapidly disappear from public spaces. With ‘Girls Make/ Play The City’, ZIJkant and Wetopia investigated what girls need. They brought together young women from very different worlds around a place they share. Together, they reimagined the city so that women, but also men, children, and the elderly, can feel at home there. Some of the ideas were already put into practice.
Julie Van Garsse (ZIJkant vzw) works for a more gender-equal society. Among other things, the organisation is committed to equal pay, the fight against (sexual) violence, and inclusive public spaces. She will speak about (in)equality in the public space, share experiences and recommendations from the Brussels participants of ‘Girls Make/ Play The City’ and will discuss with the audience what a gender-friendly city should look like.
