About the book:

Safety, coexistence, and behavior in the city are more than ever on the agenda. Through street furniture, bollards, and lighting, our behavior is guided: they invite or discourage. Who feels welcome, and who does not?

De code van de straat is a compact book full of insights into how people behave (or are expected to behave) in public space, written by criminologist and urban geographer Mattias De Backer. What rules do you follow, consciously or unconsciously, when moving through streets, squares, parks, the metro, or other public spaces? What is problematic about the term “nuisance,” and why do we almost automatically (and often wrongly) associate it with young people? Does public space truly belong to everyone, or does it only seem that way?

Program (still in development):

Introduction by Sven Gatz
Book introduction by the author, Prof. Mattias De Backer
Musical interlude
Interview with the author by Gregory Watson
Presentation by Lore Cuypers
Closing remarks by the author
Reception with book sales and signing session
