#4. Smart city and transparency: making AI visible in the city (EN)

The concept of the “smart city” is becoming increasingly relevant to urban players, who are adopting technological solutions for territorial management on a massive scale. However, the majority of citizens do not yet have the necessary knowledge to understand how the smart city works and its implications. This gap generates a feeling of mistrust due to the often opaque nature of the smart city, which reduces debate on the ethical and political stakes of these new modes of territorial management. Making the workings of these digital infrastructures visible is a major democratic challenge.

This “Data & The City” session, to be held online on June 27 between 12:00 and 13:30 , will address the issues involved in making technological devices visible, so that they can be better appropriated by citizens. It will hear from project leaders behind existing initiatives to ensure that citizens have a better understanding of how data is produced and used. How effective are these operations, and what are their scales of application today? To discuss these issues, we will welcome the French initiative Datactivist, as well as a representative of the DTPR protocol, developed in several cities around the world, whose aim is to make the purposes of technological programs used in urban spaces more transparent. This session will be introduced by Léa Rogliano (FARI-AI for the Common Good Institute).

It will also provide a networking opportunity for all administrations, associations and citizens interested or involved in these issues.
