Refugees and their path to integration (NL)

People who have fled their homes: what does their journey look like? What are their experiences with integration? A conversation about the importance of sharing your story as a refugee, experiencing what it is like to leave a place behind and find a new home elsewhere, the meaning of integration and the importance of policy. Both research and experiences are discussed in conversation with:

Pascal Debruyne, PhD in Political and Social Sciences, is a professor and researcher at Odisee University College and affiliated with the Kenniscentrum Gezinswetenschappen (Knowledge Centre for Family Studies) and the Onderzoekscentrum Sociaal Werk (Social Work Research Centre). His research focuses on the impact of migration and integration policy on the people who undergo and endure it. He wrote the book “Gezinshereniging onder druk” (Family reunification under pressure) and co-authored “Vluchtelingengezinnen na erkenning. Barrières en trajecten naar inclusie” (Refugee families after recognition. Barriers and paths to inclusion).

Ciska Vandendriessche has been working in the Brussels (social) cultural sector since 2007. She is passionate about artistic work as a driving force for a more inclusive and equal society. Since March 2020, she has been a foster mother to Ali, who fled Somalia.

Hussein Rassim is a talented Iraqi musician living in Brussels, known for his oud performances (string instrument) and deep-rooted connection to traditional and contemporary Middle Eastern music. He graduated from the Baghdad Institute of Musical Studies and has played with several renowned ensembles such as Solo Baghdad, Arumbo and Nawarís. He currently performs with Jaqamaz and Tarab Machine. His music bridges cultures and tells stories of heritage, migration and resilience with every note.

Everyone is welcome from 12:00 for a bowl of vegetarian soup in cooperation with Atelier Groot Eiland

The speaker will start at 12:30

Afterwards, there will be time for questions from the audience

Registration is recommended but not compulsory

IMPORTANT: the presentation will be held in Dutch, but your welcome to ask questions in your language
