Nele

Assistant professor and postdoctoral researcher

Nele Aernouts works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Cosmopolis Centre for Urban Research. She is assistant professor in the Msc in Urban Design and Spatial Planning and the MSc in Urban Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

Since 2013 she has been conducting research on collective dwelling forms that address the housing needs of underprivileged groups. Her main interest is to uncover the complex interplay between planning processes and spatial configurations of social housing estates and the co-habitation of its residents. Her research focuses on the spatial design, planning and governance of housing and processes of in- and exclusion that go along with it. Theoretically it is informed by studies and debates about participatory planning, housing policy and the commons.
