STADS LABO URBAIN : CITOYENS / BURGERS / CITIZENS

EN / In recent years, a number of citizen actions have emerged in Brussels that have received a lot of attention from the press. Pic Nic The Streets advocated turning the Boulevard Anspach into a pedestrian zone, the Comité Maritime called for the trees on the Avenue du Port to be saved, Avance St Josse Vooruit raised awareness of Walking Madou, Hollaback! worked to put an end to the harassment of women on the street and just recently Cyclo Guerilla BXL defended the interests of cyclists. These and many more initiatives, both big and small (greening, collective cleaning) in various neighbourhoods around Brussels, have been organised by neighbourhood comities or other associations, often in cooperation with socio-cultural players, federations of inhabitants (IEB, Bral) or creative initiatives (City Mine(d), Plus Tôt Te Laat), and sometimes even in association with international movements (Guerrilla Gardening, No Pants Subway Ride). These actions and movements have very differents approaches in terms of method of action, political style and relation to the city.
For the Brussels Academy Kick Off, we will gather together around the table for a moment of reflection, debate, and meeting between actors and citizens. Dr. David Jamar (anthropologist METICES/ULB) will open the discussion by his research on « une ethnographie politique d’un milieu culturel d’intervention urbaine et des productions de villes ‘rugueuses’ ».

STADS LABO URBAIN : ENSEIGNANTS / LEERKRACHTEN / TEACHERS

EN / Teachers in the city are confronted with different challenges than those in rural areas. That is why academic circles have worked to create a class on “urban education”, to train future teachers as well as people already working in schools as part of their continuing education. In this seminar, we will discuss these ideas in terms of practical experiences. Prof. Dr. Dirk Jacobs (sociologist GERME/ULB) will introduce the topic, and a group discussion on the position and role of teachers in the city will follow. The debate is directed both at actors on the ground as well as at those who want to reflect on the future of teaching in Brussels.

STADS LABO URBAIN : LANGUES / TALEN / LANGUAGES

EN / The third Language Barometer (Brio/VUB) went live in March 2013, analysing language use in Brussels. Researcher Prof. Dr. Rudi Janssens (Brio/VUB) will comment on the – sometimes surprising – results. The diversity of languages in Brussels has an impact on the possibilities of “making the city together”. In this group discussion, we will reflect on the consequences that this Babel-style Brussels has for those who organise activities or create projects in the city. Is it sufficient to communicate in two languages? Is the prominence of English increasing? And is it possible to reach every citizen without Arabic?

STADS LABO URBAIN : ARTISTES / KUNSTENAARS / ARTISTS

EN / At the heart of a multi-cultural Brussels there are many artists whose work is linked to the city and therefore also to the city’s diversity. Work as an artist in the city takes various forms: socio-artistic projects, urban-artistic projects, neighbourhood work, art education, and arts programming in the public space. In this seminar two experts will reflect how their projects differ… Or maybe not? And how they can learn from each others’ approach? Myriam Stoffen, director of Zinneke, and Willy Thomas, the actor of the KVS (Royal Flemish Theatre) whose festival Tok Toc Knock is currently taking place at the European Quarter. Ann Olaerts will animate and moderate the discussion.
